skysurf
Skysurfing dates back to the 1980’s, when skydivers started to jump out of airplanes with boards on their feet. Over the years it attracted more and more people and in 1993 the first competition was held. During the world meet 1995 in Germany, Rob Harris set new standards by presenting techniques such as flying upside down, fast spins and complicated transitions at the highest level of perfection.
-
history
Skysurfing originally dates back to the 1980’s, when skydivers started to jump out of airplanes with boards on their feet. In 1993 the first competition was held. In 1997 Oliver Furrer and his PULSEteam became world champion in Turkey, won the world natures Games in Brazil and was the winner of the SSI Cup Pro Tour.
-
competition
Skysurfing at competition level is a team discipline. Each team consists of two athletes: a Skysurfer and a camera flyer. The surfer performs a number of demanding figures such as sliding, spinning, and twisting. The camera flyer records the performance with a helmet-mounted camcorder.
-
big way
Skysurfing has become more and more popular and is also performed as a competition discipline. However it takes a lot of practice until a Skysurfer has reached the perfection to do ‘figure-skating’ in front of unforgiving judges!

-
coaching
Over the last 15 years Oliver Furrer successfully coached more than 100 students and introduced them to the world of skysurfing.
-
skyglider
Flying with the SkyGlider allows you to reduce the vertical speed and to provide sufficient horizontal velocity to accurately reach a target at some distance away from the exit point. The sink rate of the SkyGlider is so slow that Oliver was able to stay in the air for up to two minutes.
-
the board
At the beginning stood the idea of gliding through the skies with little wings attached to the feet.
This project has led to the first SkyGlider prototype and was carried out with the collaboration of the Institute of Lightweight Structures and Ropeways (ILS) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), Switzerland.
-
across the alps
Oliver Furrer wanted to break the record for the longest freefall distance tracking ever made on a board. On December 2nd, 1998, he started his glide overhead the Aletsch glacier and pulled the main canopy 114 seconds later in the valley between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen. Oliver had tracked 2.55 miles (4.1km) overhead the Alps.
-
news
About one year after his record flight Oliver announced a second generation of gliders: The SkyGlider G2. This new board was designed and built in Switzerland during 1999 by Holtec GmbH, TS Skyboards and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.
The latest aeronautical technologies were applied for computing the structural requirements, to make aerodynamic calculations and to choose the best construction materials. The G2 was designed in a similar way as a regular aircraft and special attention was given to improve the flight performance, reliability and safety compared to the first generation of SkyGliders. Initial test jumps with the new version were done by Oliver during a weekend in April 2000. During those days at the Lapalisse airport (France), the engineering crew, ground personnel, friends and other interested people were closely watching the spectacular drops.
-
wingsuit
WingSuits consist of small ‘wings’ that run between the arms and hips of the flyers. Another ‘wing’ attaches both feet together. The ‘wings’ inflate during freefall and diver and suit melt together into one aerodynamic package similar to the wing of an airplane.
-
across the volcano
Oliver's next challenge was to fly across an active volcano in his WingSuit, and the ‘Kilauea Caldera’ on the Big Island of Hawaii proved to be the right choice. He jumped from an altitude of 10'000 feet, glided over the lava area, flew right through the steam and landed next to Highway 130.
-
high altitude
In June 2000 Oliver Furrer attempted to break Joe Kittinger's record of 4 minutes and 36 seconds in freefall, dating back to 1960. He was wearing a newly designed WingSuit from ‘BirdMan’. On 3rd June 2000 Oliver managed to be in freefall for 3 minutes 47 seconds.
-
over the alps
During 2005 Oliver and his team did some hardcore WingSuit flying. After exiting the aircraft, they did a flyby across the beautiful Jungfraujoch and then attacked the peak of the Eiger at 13.000 ft (3970m) above sea level.
-
competition
WingSuit jumping is a highly challenging competition sport, and only the best athletes are able to face the challenges of high speed figure-skating between heaven and earth.
-
flocking
Flockdiving is a discipline whereby big groups of jumers are trailing the sky in formation.
-
coaching
After you have seen the above video and you think you are not a “Stupid Twit” because you have already more then 150 skydive jumps, then you are welcome to contacting me. More details about my coaching method, wingsuit rental, costs, etc. you will find in the shop.

news
Oliver won the "Wings over Gransee" competition and proved that the new Apache Tonysuits has the best performance overall. In the three disciplines (distance, time & speed) the 18 participators flow there wingsuits as good as possible. Everybody used the FlySight GPS and thanks to the Paralog software all measurement could be exactly evaluated. On the final round, Oliver managed after the steep dive to climb within his wingsuit for 4 second – congratulation!
-
skateboard
Why not use a classic skateboard and use it to surf through the air? It is quite difficult to stay together as a group of skydivers on such small boards and with a speed of over 160 mph.
-
street landing
For several months Oliver Furrer was jumping with SkateBoards as part of the production for the PULSE 04 video. He used the Pilatus Porter at his local DropZone and was trying to land the skateboard on his feet on the street.
-
news
After a long and intense preparation period Oliver and same friends traveled to Oahu, Hawaii, for a three week skydiving holiday. They jumped with
with toys like skateboards, bodyboards, surfboards, flippers/masks and snorkels, swim-dolphins and air-streamers, which proved to be a great experience.
-
snowboard
Oliver Furrer is performing different skydiving techniques, including the use of a snowboard. During the snowboard stunts, Oliver Furrer and Tim Glass were coordinating their jumps in a way to be able to surf around each other during freefall. After opening their canopies they sailed towards a glacier and cut away their parachutes just before touchdown.
-
ski
Oliver Furrer jumped out of a plane while wearing regular skis as part of a Commercial for Swissair. It was challenging to implement the Director’s ideas into reality, as regular skis are usually not worn between heaven and earth.
-
freefly
FreeFlying is the fastest growing and most innovative discipline of skydiving. It evolved from a desire to have fun through exploring the almost limitless ways to fly your body in freefall and is fast-paced and dynamic.
-
event
During several festivals, events, boogies and records, Oliver Furrer had a chance to perform as jumper in the world class freefly discipline.
-
student coaching
During the last 12 years, Oliver Furrer was giving professional coaching in different disciplines. Many skydivers took the opportunity to learn from the best. They all manage to improved their flying skills and to fine-tune their jumping-techniques.
-
canopy piloting
Parachute technology has advanced greatly in recent years. With the development of smaller, faster and more radical canopies basic individual piloting and landing skills were no longer enough. As a result, the sport has a change of focus towards flying along mountain ridges and landing parachutes safely in every condition.
New and exciting disciplines have now evolved and the feeling under canopy is still special – fly like a bird. So canopy piloting a hugely exiting event for spectators has evolved as a result.
-
mountain swooping
It is a great challenge to do canopy flying in groups. Speeding down over high altitude snowfields, steering your parachute above or below treetops and swoop safely through a valley-lake at the bottom of the Swiss Alps - a unique experience!
-
accuracy demo jumps
The PULSEteam opened the RedBull AirRace at Interlaken, Switzerland, with a spectacular performance, including smoke and flags and a perfectly accurate landing in front of over 60’000 spectators.
-
speed flying
Speedflying, is a new sport which includes flying down mountain ridges, riding over snow fields and swooping cliffs. It got established in the skydive- and paraglider-world with their own rules.
-
BASE jumping
Jumping from a fixed object is very demanding and requires a high degree of experience and discipline.
There are many different reasons why people do BASE jumping (Building, Antenna, Span, Earth). However, all jumpers share their passion for outdoor activities and the thrill of adventure.
-
story
BASE-jumps are often preceded by long hikes in the mountains, where one can enjoy beautiful forests, lakes, meadows and rocks. Oliver is constantly on the lookout for new jumping-locations. This year’s highlight was a 200 meter dive from a tree located high on top of a rock at Meiringen (Switzerland), where he directly jumped from a tree branch into the void (see below).
-
wingsuit
The growth of the BASE-jumper community over the last few years triggered many new technological innovations. Many jumpers are using high performance WingSuits to increase the duration of their flights in view of time and distance. WingSuits have opened the possibility to jump from new exit points and to soar along cliffs, mountain ridges and valleys.
-
race
During the last three international ProBase Wingsuit Races Oliver attempted the competitions and did many good final results.
The jumps were made from the ‚Mürrenfluh’ (1600 meters above sea level), the landing spot was located at the village of Stechelberg (922 meters ASL).
The goal was to cover the flying distance between the departure and landing point in the shortest time possible. This can only be done by wearing an aerodynamically perfect wingsuit which allows for an optimized ratio between sink and glide rate. The event was very successful and has the potential to become a recognized Worldcup race.
-
news
During one week Oliver and some fiends travelled through Switzerland from East to West and BASE jumped many high cliffs. Every day the PULSEteam members discovered different hikes up to the mountains summits and they flow down the valleys within their wingsuits. They experienced many fantastic flights along walls, over ridges and did nice “proximity” paths.
The highlight of the “Tour-de-Suisse” was the new jump in the Melchtal region. Oliver made in advance all investigations to the cliff slope, the trail up, cables at the landing area, calculated of the height/distance ratio, etc. before he opened this new exit called “Faultier”!
